Welcome:
From
Henry T. Lynch, M.D.
As
the Chairman of the Department of Preventive Medicine
and President of the Hereditary Cancer Institute at
Creighton University, I am very pleased to welcome you
to the High Risk Registry website. Creighton University’s
Hereditary Cancer Institute (HCI) has been granted the
opportunity to host the High Risk Registry as an integral
component of the Early Detection Research Network (EDRN)
sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. This network
is a collaborative group of over 25 of the top cancer
research institutions nationwide and in Canada dedicated
to cancer prevention through early detection. The Registry
website is an extension of that goal. It will help to
transmit a rich cross section of cancer related issues
of particular importance to registry members as well
as to the general public and medical professionals in
a most expeditious manner.
At Creighton, we are especially excited about the Registry
and the EDRN project as the Hereditary Cancer Institute
has a long history spanning over thirty years of early
cancer detection and prevention in relation to familial
cancer. In three decades, HCI has amassed a large database
of cancer affected families and have tried fervently
to eradicate cancer development in these families by
catching cancer at its earliest stages. With the creation
of this collaborative network, the level of medical
participation in tackling the goal of early cancer detection
and prevention for not only familial cancer, but for
all cancer types, will significantly increase. This
is an unprecedented endeavor in cancer research and
provides a very promising opportunity for improving
medical practice in relation to cancer prevention.
The
various sections of this website offer opportunities
for increased cancer awareness in high risk individuals,
and will also make available information detailing research
studies aimed at cancer prevention. If you are an identified
hereditary cancer gene mutation carrier, I hope that
you will consider joining the High Risk Registry at
Creighton University and further, participating in these
early detection research studies. Your identity as a
Registry member and all other personal information will
not be made public. Therefore, your individual information
will never appear on this website. For your convenience,
this website provides information about joining the
Registry, eligibility, confidentiality and ways in which
to contact Creighton University for additional information.
With
cancer being one of the leading causes of death, the
Hereditary Cancer Institute at Creighton University
looks forward to this collective opportunity for improving
early cancer detection and prevention for the benefit
of all. Thank you for your interest in this project
and for visiting our website.
Sincerely,
Henry
